History, Culture, and Celebration

Juneteenth in Montgomery is more than a moment on the calendar. It is a continuation of a story that helped shape the nation. From the courage of the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the powerful work happening today across the city’s cultural and historical spaces, Montgomery continues to be a place where movements are created, honored, and reimagined.

As we reflect on the past, we also celebrate the present with music, culture, food, and community coming together in ways that feel both meaningful and joyful. This year’s Juneteenth lineup may be more curated, but it is filled with experiences that invite you to celebrate freedom your way.

Four Nights. One Vibe. B.B. King’s Juneteenth Takeover

B.B. King's Blues Club is turning Juneteenth into a full four-day celebration from June 18 through June 21, with something happening each night to keep the energy going. It all starts with Karaoke Culture featuring Lit Visionz on June 18, followed by The 65 South Show on June 19, bringing a mix of entertainment and crowd interaction. June 20 sets the tone with the All Black Affair featuring Jalesa McRae, and June 21 closes things out with Father Figures featuring Trey Merritt, giving the weekend a smooth and soulful finish.

This is the kind of place where you can show up, settle in, and enjoy the night without overthinking it. Expect great music, a fun crowd, and an atmosphere that feels easy and welcoming. The food and drinks are always part of the experience here, with flavors that complement the night and keep you coming back for more. Whether you stop in for one night or all four, B.B. Legacy Sites  and Jazz on Juneteenth

Juneteenth is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with the stories that continue to shape Montgomery. On June 19, visitors can experience all four EJI's Legacy Sites free from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, each offering a powerful perspective on American history.

At the Legacy Museum, immersive exhibits trace the journey from enslavement to mass incarceration, offering a deeper understanding of how history continues to impact the present. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice provides a powerful outdoor space dedicated to the victims of racial terror lynchings, creating a place for remembrance and reflection. At the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, visitors can explore the lives of enslaved people through large-scale sculptures and storytelling experiences set along the Alabama River. Montgomery Square adds another layer to the experience, highlighting the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the decade that helped reshape the nation.

Each site offers a unique perspective, and together they tell a broader story that takes time to fully take in. Many visitors find it meaningful to return more than once, allowing space to reflect and experience each site more deeply.

After a day of learning and reflection, continue your Juneteenth experience with an evening of live jazz presented by the Equal Justice Initiative. This special concert, Jazz on Juneteenth with the Equal Justice Initiative, features Nate Smith, known for his dynamic blend of jazz, funk, and soul, and Liz Wright, whose powerful vocals draw from gospel and jazz traditions. Together, they create a performance that is both expressive and memorable.

Tickets are available now, and this is a concert you will not want to miss. Secure your seats early and experience a Juneteenth evening that brings together music, history, and community in a meaningful way.
