Speakeasies

Go around the corner, look for the green door, knock twice and tell them Joe sent you. Okay, it really doesn’t require that much secrecy to have a great time at one of Montgomery’s quirky, tucked away nightlife spots. You just have to know where to look for these locales where you can enjoy delicious cocktails and rub elbows with some interesting characters.

When you step inside Leroy Lounge on Boultier Street, you’ll think you’ve stepped back in time to a prohibition-era speakeasy. The horse race-themed setting, located near El Rey Burrito Lounge, pays tribute to a special winning horse. But here you’ll be in the winner’s circle with 18 draft beers and a top-shelf selection of cocktails to try. With social media reviews like “Great atmosphere. Hand-crafted cocktails are delicious!” Pine Bar, a non-smoking establishment in the Old Cloverdale neighborhood, is worth finding.

While The Gin on Eastchase Boulevard in East Montgomery is a bit more commercial in appearance you’ll be just as welcome at a place some have called a little gem. Order a citrus-influenced Rosemary Tango or go for the classic Old Fashioned.  In the historic Cottage Hill neighborhood head up the hill on Goldthwaite Street for the aptly named Hilltop Public House where you can also start your day with one of their espressos or return in the evening for cocktail, beer or glass of wine.

Get dressed to the nines for an experience at 23 Court (23 S. Court Street) where all are welcome, as long as they respect the code, Eschew your t-shirts and flip flops in favor of collared shirts for the gents and cocktail dresses for the dames. You’ll be amply rewarded with a spirits list and cigar selection to set the mood for an elegant evening on the town.
