Located in Old Cloverdale, Things We Like is more than just a shop; it’s a curated experience of culture, community, and connection. Owned by Charmaine and Norman Carter, the store reflects their passion for travel, cultural experiences, and sharing a piece of the world with their community.
After spending over twenty years in Atlanta, the couple returned to Montgomery with a bold vision: to create a one-of-a-kind shopping destination where locals could explore unique, handpicked treasures from around the world—right in their own city.
Charmaine, a Montgomery native, felt a pull to bring her love for the city and her global experiences into a space where she and Norman could share the things they cherish most. They wanted to fill a gap they saw in Montgomery by offering carefully selected items that speak to both local roots and global adventures.
The moment you step into Things We Like, you’re embraced by a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Charmaine and Norman are known for their personal touch—visit often, and Norman might just greet you by name, making you feel like an old friend. Charmaine takes you on a personal journey, sharing stories about their travels across Alabama and around the world, where they discovered the unique items on display.
Each product in the shop tells a story. The selection is diverse and meaningful, from sustainable glassware by Porter Green to handcrafted quilts by Gee's Bend Quilters. Many items support larger causes, like the Haitian bracelets and products from The Thousand Villages, where proceeds go back to the communities that created them, funding education and sustainability projects.
And it’s not just the stories of the items that make the shop special. Charmaine and Norman have built the store with inclusivity and community in mind, offering something for everyone—even their beloved fur baby, Stoney Buttons, has his own section! The doggy corner features everything from pet essentials to quirky items like dog beer, showing just how thoughtful the Carter's are in their approach to providing something fun and unexpected for all visitors.
As if the shopping experience isn’t delightful enough, the store will soon add a kids' section, expanding its offerings for the entire family. Regulars will also be excited to join their upcoming Puzzle Hour, a community gathering where patrons can connect, share ideas, and enjoy each other’s company.
But don't expect to shop online. Charmaine and Norman purposefully keep their inventory offline, encouraging visitors to experience the magic of the store in person. Limited quantities ensure that the items you find are special, and once they’re gone, they may never return—making each visit to Things We Like a new adventure.
Things We Like isn’t just a place to shop; it’s a space to explore, connect, and be inspired. Charmaine and Norman’s dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and bringing people together through shared stories and unique finds makes their store a true gem in Montgomery.
