This October, the River Region is bringing the creeps, shrieks, thrills, and chills.
Ok, we’ll admit there may be more thrills than shrieks and chills this year, but the Halloween vibes are very much alive across Montgomery and the River Region.
So don't hesitate to go all in on costumes or simply soak up the fall fun; there’s something for every kind of Halloween fan. We’ve divided the guide by the kind of fun you’re looking for, making it easy to skip ahead or explore it all.
Pick your kind of spooky and start planning your Halloween adventures around the River Region.
Little Boos & Fall Fun
Spooky season isn’t just for the grown-up ghouls. Halloween is even more fun when the whole family joins in. Calling all caped crusaders, mini witches, and pint-sized pumpkins, Montgomery and the River Region offer plenty of ways to make the most of the season together.
A LITTLE MESS, A LOT OF IMAGINATION
Halloween is one of those times of year when creativity gets to run a little wild. It’s the perfect excuse to find your style and lean into the spooky, silly, colorful, or completely unexpected. Around the River Region, there are plenty of ways to put your own spin on the season and let your imagination take over.
Add a new member to your crew by adopting a skeleton, giving it a name, dressing it up, and turning it into the funniest, spookiest, or most unexpected member of the family. Or plan an unconventional fall night out with dinner and a guided pumpkin-painting experience designed for all ages and skill levels.
For the littles, Halloween Day Camp turns a full day into a celebration of imagination. Kids ages 7–14 can make pumpkin gut slime, textured ghosts, skeleton art, haunted houses, trick-or-treat bags, and other festive creations that help set the scene for Halloween. If a full day doesn’t fit the schedule, the evening slime experience delivers plenty of ooey-gooey, hands-on fun in a shorter outing.
However you join in, these activities are an easy way to get everyone ready for Halloween, let imaginations run wild, and add a few personal touches to Halloween along the way.

Pumpkin Run and Lots O’ Fun takes families through scenic Old Cloverdale for a morning of running, walking, costumes, and a little friendly competition. Everyone who completes the 5K or Fun Run earns a medal, with additional awards for top finishers and overall winners. The costumes get their own moment, too, with prizes for adult, teen, fun, and dog categories. Yes, people-friendly pups are welcome to join the fun run. Rain or shine, lace up, get into character, and go for the gold.
MAKE IT A FALL FESTIVAL DAY
October brings cooler days, colorful landscapes, and plenty of reasons to spend a little more time outside. Some fall days are simply made for wandering a festival, picking up something local, and soaking in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the season. Around the River Region, one Saturday brings three different ways to do just that.
Start the day with your pick of two fall festival experiences around the River Region. In Pike Road, enjoy an easygoing outing filled with seasonal favorites, family activities, and local vendors, all with free admission. If you have access to Maxwell, the family-friendly side of Doppel Fest offers kids’ crafts, a trackless train, music, food, and a pumpkin patch. Doppel Fest also includes a separate adults-only experience, which we’ll save for Halloween After Dark.
Later in the day, head to Montgomery for a little more Halloween mischief and an early start on the candy collecting at The NewSouth Bookstore, where trick-or-treating, games, witch’s brew, spooky reads, and a few ghostly surprises keep the fun going.

Seasonal Thrills
Not every October thrill has to be terrifying. Sometimes the fun is in the mystery, the mischief, the music, and the stories that feel just right for October.
FRIGHTFUL FILMS
The Capri Theatre is keeping the scares on the big screen this October with Terror Tuesdays, bringing a mix of Halloween favorites and cult classics to Old Cloverdale throughout the month. And the frightful films don’t stop on Tuesdays. The Capri adds another chilling classic to its Film Class lineup before turning up the scare factor on Halloween night with The Shining. The Capri Theatre isn’t the only place putting Halloween on the big screen. Take movie night outside for an under-the-stars screening of Sinners, adding an open-air twist to your Halloween movie plans.

MISCHIEF, MUSIC & MURDER
October is bringing a little mischief to Montgomery's stages, with murder, dark comedy, music, and just enough twisted fun to fit the season. At Alabama Shakespeare Festival, a murder mystery goes spectacularly off the rails. It is not a scary play, but with a dead body that refuses to stay dead, a mystery unraveling in real time, and a production that seems determined to fall apart, it has just enough mischief to fit the season. For something with a little more bite, Pike Road Theatre Company brings the cult favorite Little Shop of Horrors to Faulkner Theatre. Expect catchy songs, outrageous characters, romance, comedy, and one very hungry plant in a delightfully twisted musical that blends humor and horror. Then at The NewSouth Bookstore, Karren Pell and the Old Alabama Revue lean fully into Halloween with a live program of spooky songs, old favorites, snacks, drinks, and costumes encouraged. One gives you murder with laughs, the other music that raises the spirits; both make for a fun October night out.

A LITTLE TRICK, A LITTLE TREAT, A LITTLE WICKED
Halloween is your excuse to trade the usual night out for something with a little more costume, character, and October mischief. Gather your favorite people, lean into the theme, and make an evening of it around the River Region. In Downtown Wetumpka, throw on your best witchy look for a night of sipping, shopping, strolling, and special offers along the way. In Prattville, give paint-and-sip night a darker twist with skeleton-inspired art, emo music, drinks, and food specials.
At Maxwell AFB, Doppel Fest shifts into an adults-only evening with live music, games, a costume contest, stein hoist, pretzel-eating contest, themed food, German beer, wine, and more. It’s a lively second act to the family-friendly portion of the festival and another fun way to keep the October celebration going.

Start sampling the spirits early and work your way through the Halloween menu before Fright Night... because that’s when things really get interesting.
Fright Night keeps the celebration going with a live band, a full costume party, and cash prizes. Get creative, dress to compete, and show up for a Halloween night filled with music, food, drinks, and plenty of energy at BB King’s.

DON’T MISS THE BOO-OAT
Halloween fun hits the water in Montgomery with two ways to take the party off land. Sip-n-Cycle brings back its annual costume boat party, giving your crew a chance to dress up, turn up the music, and celebrate October while cruising the Alabama River.
Then on Halloween night, things get a little creepier aboard Haunting on the Harriott. Costumes are required, so this is the night to fully commit to the look and come ready to party.
