Holidays in Montgomery are something special; the city comes alive with good tidings and great joy, but nothing lights up the season quite like the Christmas Lights Festival at the Montgomery Zoo. In December, the Zoo transforms into a sparkling winter wonderland, with twinkling lights, festive treats, holiday music, and a visit from Santa that create unforgettable memories for families and friends.
And this year, the magic is bigger and brighter than ever with two new areas that are sure to make this favorite tradition even more exciting.
Holiday Traditions & Experiences
If you’ve never been to the Christmas Lights Festival at the Montgomery Zoo before or it’s been a while, here’s what you can expect. Twinkling lights wrapped around every corner, holiday music drifting through the air, and families bundled up, sipping hot. chocolate as they explore one of Montgomery’s most magical holiday traditions.
One of the best parts? You get to stroll through the zoo after dark or hop on the festive train ride for a cozy journey through the lights. Kids (and adults!) love stopping by the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum to visit Santa Claus, available nightly through December 23.
Inside the museum, you’ll also find the charming Christmas Tree Village, where local businesses, schools, and community groups decorate trees in creative holiday themes.
At the Overlook Café, the holiday spirit continues with live performances by local choirs, dancers, and school groups. It’s the perfect spot to warm up with hot chocolate, fresh-baked cookies, and seasonal treats before heading back out into the lights.
And of course, no trip is complete without a stop at the Zoo Gift Shop or Museum Store, ideal for finding plush animals, ornaments, souvenirs, or that last-minute Christmas gift.
Theme Nights You Won’t Want to Miss
If you love a little extra fun with your holiday lights, the Montgomery Zoo’s Christmas Lights Festival offers the perfect excuse for friends and family to get creative and turn up the cheer with festive theme nights all season long. Ranging from tacky sweaters and team spirit to Star Wars costumes and cozy Christmas pajamas, these themed evenings give guests a chance to dress up, take photos, and make the experience even more memorable with holiday fun under the lights.

New for 2025: Frosty Frontier & Safari to Santa
This year, the festival is getting a magical update, and trust us, you’re going to love it. For 2025, the zoo has added two brand-new themed areas that bring even more sparkle, fun, and holiday wonder to this favorite Montgomery tradition.
Frosty Frontier — A Winter Wonderland in Alabama
Once you step into Frosty Frontier, it feels like you’ve walked straight into a Christmas snow globe, without ever leaving Montgomery. This area is decorated with cool white lights draped across bushes, trees, and winding paths to create a soft, frosty sparkle everywhere you look. Beautiful snowflake-shaped lights shine from the lamp posts, adding to the winter magic, while a big snowflake photo spot is ready for your perfect Christmas card picture. It’s dreamy, magical, and the perfect place to start your holiday adventure.
Safari to Santa — From the African Savanna to the North Pole
The second new experience, Safari to Santa, mixes animals and holiday magic in a way the Montgomery Zoo has never done before. Guests follow a fun path where glowing African animal statues look like they are traveling to the North Pole, guided by a bright trail of colorful lights. Along the way, the zoo has its first-ever color-changing light display, surprising visitors with changing colors and glowing effects that make the whole scene feel alive. As you get closer to Santa’s spot, a bright “Stairway to Santa” appears, lined with sparkling light arches and a happy North Pole sign, inviting you forward. Follow the glowing path, which leads you straight to Santa inside the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum, and enjoy the perfect festive ending to this magical journey.
