Museum of Alabama
Located in downtown Montgomery across from the Alabama State Capitol, the Museum of Alabama is managed by the Alabama Department of Archives & History and has preserved Alabama’s history for more than a century. Admission is always free, with accessible parking and entry available on Adams Avenue.
Experience Alabama’s Story
The museum’s permanent exhibits offer a comprehensive look at Alabama’s past and present. The Land of Alabama explores how the state’s geography, geology, and natural resources shaped its development. At the center of the museum, Alabama Voices brings history to life through hundreds of artifacts, images, documents, and audiovisual programs that highlight the people and stories that define Alabama.
Children’s Gallery
Families can explore history together in the museum’s Children's Gallery, which reopened in November 2025. This interactive space invites young learners to discover Alabama’s story through hands-on activities, creative play, and age-appropriate exploration designed to engage curious minds.
Rotating Exhibits & Special Displays
Temporary exhibits change throughout the year, offering new perspectives and encouraging repeat visits. Past exhibits have explored topics such as Alabama women, inaugural fashion, and powerful works of art that reflect diverse experiences across the state.
Tours, Research & Accessibility
The Museum of Alabama is primarily self-guided, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. Guided tours are available for groups of 15 or more with advance notice. Those interested in deeper research can plan a visit to the Archives, where additional historical resources are available.
