From Itta Bena to International Icon
Born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation near Itta Bena, Mississippi, Riley B. King was the son of sharecroppers. He grew up surrounded by the soulful rhythms of the South. After being raised by his grandmother and later settling in Indianola, King worked in a cotton gin before answering the call of music that would ultimately change his life and the world.
At just 21 years old, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where the city’s vibrant music scene transformed him into a radio star, live performer, and disc jockey. It was in Memphis that he first gained recognition as the “Beale Street Blues Boy,” which later evolved into the iconic name B.B. King. On Beale Street, he shared the stage with legendary artists like Bobby Bland, Johnny Ace, and Earl Forest, igniting a journey that would establish him as a global icon.

The Birth of B.B. King’s Blues Club
On May 2, 1991, B.B. King joined forces with Tommy Peters and John Elkington to open the very first B.B. King’s Blues Club at the legendary corner of Beale and Second Street in Memphis. The club soon became a beacon for live blues, mouthwatering food, and a vibrant community of music lovers. B.B. himself graced the stage there time and again, turning the club into a living, breathing tribute to his music and indomitable spirit.
