There’s just something about spring in Montgomery... longer days, warmer air, and that unmistakable rush of whitewater returning to full force. This year at Montgomery Whitewater, spring will kick off with the Hootenanny Spring Kick-off, featuring the 3rd annual float race, the event to mark the official return of the water channels. This means rafting, kayaking, tubing, and outdoor adventures are officially back in action. Every activity across the park is open and ready for the season ahead. Spring at Montgomery Whitewater isn’t just a reopening, it’s a celebration.

If you’ve been waiting for the moment to dust off your paddle, lace up your running shoes, or claim your favorite patio seat, this is it.

Hootenanny Spring Kick-Off | March 21

The Hootenanny Spring Kick-Off is officially on Saturday, March 21. Montgomery Whitewater kicks off spring with a full day of racing, music, and spirited competition. The day begins on land with the Hootenanny 5K at 10 AM, and the 1-Mile Fun Run at 11 AM, both open to all ages and perfect for families, friend groups, and even four-legged companions. Registration includes race shirts (if registered by March 6) and post-race perks.

Then the action moves to the water with the Boater X and Ducky X competition before the main event, the Hootenanny Float Race at 2 PM. The Hootenanny Float Race is a bracket-style battle where inflatable pool floats take on the rapids. Competitors climb aboard their chosen float and launch into Montgomery Whitewater's competition channel for a head-to-head race downstream. Each round sends multiple racers through the course at the same time, navigating waves, currents, and splashes, with the first float across the finish line advancing to the next heat.

It’s fast, unpredictable, and wildly entertaining to watch. Some floats glide smoothly. Others spin, stall, or flip. That’s part of the fun. With every round, the competition narrows until one float and one racer claim ultimate bragging rights.

That’s just the first wave of what spring has in store at Montgomery Whitewater. The full spring lineup includes recurring favorites and new experiences designed for all ages.

International Competition Comes to the River Region

From March 13–15, Montgomery Whitewater takes the global stage as it hosts Race One of the 2026 World Ranking. This event is sanctioned by the International Canoe Federation and classified as a Level 3 Ranking Race, meaning it’s a high-level, internationally recognized competition that attracts serious athletes earning global ranking points. In short, this isn’t a casual race weekend; it’s elite competition right here in Montgomery. Approximately 80–100 elite athletes from the United States, Canada, and South America will compete in Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross as they prepare for the July 2026 World Championships in Oklahoma City.

If you’re new to the sport, here’s what to expect: Canoe Slalom challenges athletes to paddle through a series of hanging gates in fast-moving water, requiring precision, control, and split-second decision-making. Kayak Cross brings even more intensity, sending multiple racers down the course simultaneously in a head-to-head sprint where speed, strategy, and agility determine who advances.

It’s an exciting opportunity to watch national and international talent navigate powerful currents and technical obstacles up close. The action is fast, the margins are tight, and the atmosphere along the channel is electric. It’s world-class whitewater competition without leaving Montgomery.

A Weekend of Whitewater Action: Down South Paddle Battle | March 27–29

Later in the month, the energy continues with the Down South Paddle Battle, part of the Paddle South Freestyle Tour. This marks the tour’s only stop in 2026 on an artificial whitewater channel, giving athletes the advantage of consistent, engineered waves and features designed specifically for performance.

Instead of racing against a clock alone, freestyle competitors surf stationary waves and perform tricks that are judged on creativity, control, and difficulty. Meanwhile, Boater X racers go head-to-head in fast-paced heats, sprinting downstream, maneuvering around obstacles, and battling for position all the way to the finish.

The Paddle Battle welcomes everyone from first-time competitors to seasoned pros chasing tour points, creating a weekend that feels both competitive and community-driven. If you don't plan to compete, plan to settle in on the patio or greenspace with clear views of the course, so you can easily follow every run and cheer on the action. For those competing, onsite camping is available during this special event, turning the weekend into a full whitewater experience that blends sport, connection, and high-energy fun.

Spring isn’t just for thrill-seekers. It’s also for explorers.

The 2026 Spring Session of Nature School, presented by Max Credit Union, runs Saturdays from March 7 through May 30 (9 AM – 11 AM) and invites children ages 2–10 to discover the magic of seasonal change through hands-on outdoor learning. Designed to spark curiosity and build confidence, this small-group program connects students with the River Region's ecosystems through observation, movement, creativity, and environmental stewardship.

Each month brings a new focus aligned with spring’s transformation. In March, students explore vernal pools and tadpoles, learning about frog life cycles and even testing water quality. April turns to soil science, worms, and the fascinating systems beneath our feet. By May, it’s all about pollinators, from flower exploration to studying bee behavior and building “bug hotels.”

Classes are divided by age group, capped at 10 students, and sold individually at $25 per session, allowing families to register for the dates that fit their schedules. For children ages 2–4, a caregiver participates alongside them to create shared outdoor learning experiences.

Sunday Brunch at Eddy’s
